Administrative Bodies

The following are the responsible bodies for the organization and general operation of the Joint Inter-institutional-Interdepartmental Postgraduate Programme:

  • The Senate of the University of West Attica,
  • The Postgraduate Studies Committee of the University of West Attica,
  • The Programme Studies Committee of the IIPSP,
  • The Coordinating Committee,
  • The Director of the IIPSP.

The Director is a member of the Teaching and Research Staff (DEP), preferably at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor, appointed for a two-year term, with the possibility of unlimited renewal. In the case of the IIPSP “Resuscitation,” one (1) DEP member with demonstrably direct relevance to the subject area is appointed as Director by the Programme Studies Committee.

The Director of the IIPSP has the following responsibilities:

  • Chairs the Programme Studies Committee, prepares the agenda, and convenes its meetings,
  • Makes recommendations to the Programme Studies Committee on matters concerning the organization and operation of the IIPSP,
  • Makes recommendations to the Programme Studies Committee and other bodies of the IIPSP and the HEI on matters related to the effective operation of the IIPSP,
  • Is the Scientific Coordinator of the IIPSP and exercises the corresponding responsibilities,
  • Monitors the implementation of decisions made by the IIPSP’s bodies and the Regulations for Postgraduate Programmes of Studies, as well as monitoring the execution of the IIPSP’s budget,
  • Exercises any other responsibility defined in the decision establishing the IIPSP.

The Director of the IIPSP, as well as the members of the Programme Studies Committee, are not entitled to any fee or compensation for carrying out the responsibilities assigned to them in the performance of their duties.

The CC is established by a decision of the Programme Studies Committee (PSC) for a two-year term. It consists of the Director of the IIPSP and four (4) DEP members from the collaborating Departments who have a related subject area to that of the IIPSP and undertake teaching duties in it. The C.C. is responsible for monitoring and coordinating the operation of the programme, and in particular for:

  • Drafting the initial annual budget of the IIPSP and its amendments, provided the IIPSP has resources in accordance with Article 84, and recommending its approval to the Research Committee of the Special Account for Research Funds (ELKE), excluding the quarterly revisions of annual budgets mentioned in case (b) of par. 3 of Article 239,
  • Drafting the programme’s final report and recommending its approval to the Department’s Assembly,
  • Approving expenditures and being able to delegate this authority to the Director of the IIPSP,
  • Approving the granting of scholarships, whether reciprocal or not, as specified in the decision establishing the IIPSP and the regulations for postgraduate and doctoral studies,
  • Recommending to the Programme Studies Committee the allocation of teaching duties, as well as the assignment of teaching duties to the instructor categories mentioned in Article 83,
  • Recommending to the Programme Studies Committee the invitation of Visiting Professors to cover the teaching needs of the Postgraduate Programme,
  • Drafting a plan for the modification of the curriculum, which it submits to the Programme Studies Committee,
  • Recommending to the Programme Studies Committee the redistribution of courses among the academic semesters, as well as matters related to the qualitative upgrading of the curriculum.

The Programme Studies Committee (PSC) is established by a decision of the Senate of the University of West Attica, following a recommendation from the Assemblies of the collaborating departments: the Department of Midwifery and the Department of Biomedical Sciences of the School of Health and Welfare Sciences of the University of West Attica (UNIWA), and the School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). It is composed of members of the Teaching and Research Staff (DEP). The number of members and its composition are defined in the IIPSP’s Protocol of Cooperation. The PSC of the IIPSP “Resuscitation” is a five-member body and consists of two (2) DEP members from the Department of Midwifery of UNIWA, one (1) DEP member from the Department of Biomedical Sciences of UNIWA, and two (2) DEP members from the School of Medicine of NKUA.

The PSC forms the Coordinating Committee (CC), which consists of the same members as the PSC. The PSC is responsible for the organization, administration, and management of the IIPSP and exercises the same responsibilities as those of a Department Assembly in accordance with current legislation, with the following duties:

  • Recommends to the Senate, through the Postgraduate Studies Committee, the necessity of establishing/modifying the IIPSP, as well as extending its duration,
  • Appoints the Director of the IIPSP,
  • Forms committees for the evaluation of applications from prospective postgraduate students and approves their enrollment in the IIPSP,
  • Assigns teaching duties among the instructors of the IIPSP and may assign supplementary teaching duties to doctoral candidates of the collaborating Departments, under the supervision of an IIPSP instructor,
  • Forms examination committees for the examination of the master’s theses of postgraduate students and appoints the supervisor for each thesis,
  • Certifies the successful completion of studies and awards the Master’s Degree Diploma,
  • Approves the final report of the IIPSP, following the recommendation of the C.C.,
  • Assigns postgraduate students to carry out supplementary teaching duties in first-cycle study programmes of the collaborating Departments,
  • Exercises any other legal authority.

Professors Emeriti of the collaborating Departments may participate in the Programme Studies Committee, provided they offer teaching work in the IIPSP.

By a decision of the Senate, following a proposal from the Deanships of the Schools of the University of West Attica, the Postgraduate Studies Committee is formed. The Committee consists of one (1) member of the Teaching and Research Staff (DEP) from each School of UNIWA, one (1) member from the categories of Special Educational Staff (EEP), Laboratory Teaching Staff (EDIP), and Special Technical Laboratory Staff (ETEP) of UNIWA, and the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, as President. The members of the Committee have experience in organizing and participating in second-cycle study programmes. The term of the Committee is two (2) academic years.

The responsibilities of the Committee are:

  • To submit an opinion to the Senate of UNIWA on the establishment of new Postgraduate Programmes or the modification of existing ones, after evaluating the requests from the Department Assemblies for the establishment of new programmes, their related feasibility and sustainability reports, and the costing of the programme’s operation, as well as the possibility of referring them back if the recommendation is not sufficiently justified or the accompanying reports are not complete,
  • To draft a Regulations framework for Postgraduate Programmes of UNIWA and submit it to the Senate,
  • To prepare a model plan for the operating regulations of a Postgraduate Programme,
  • To check compliance with the operating regulations of the Postgraduate Programmes,
  • To monitor the implementation of legislation, regulations, and decisions of the administrative bodies of UNIWA by the Postgraduate Programmes,
  • To monitor the implementation of the procedure for exemption from the obligation to pay tuition fees,
  • Any other responsibility defined by the Internal Regulations of each Postgraduate Programme. By a decision of the Senate, following a recommendation from the Postgraduate Studies Committee, the regulations for postgraduate study programmes are approved, which constitute a distinct chapter of the internal operating regulations of UNIWA.

The Senate has the following responsibilities:

  • Approves the establishment of a Postgraduate Programme of Studies (PPS) or the modification of the decision to establish it,
  • Approves the extension of the duration of operation of the Postgraduate Programmes,
  • Forms the Programme Studies Committee,
  • Decides on the abolition of Postgraduate Programmes offered by the University of West Attica.
